Avoid Travel Headaches: 5 Things to Do Before Going Abroad

Traveling internationally is an exciting adventure, but failing to prepare can lead to unnecessary stress and complications. A little prep goes a long way in making your trip smooth and stress-free. Before you take off, make sure youโ€™ve checked these five crucial tasks off your list to ensure a smooth, hassle-free trip.

1. Exchange Some Local Currency

While credit cards are widely accepted, having local cash on hand is ๐‘’๐‘ ๐‘ ๐‘’๐‘›๐‘ก๐‘–๐‘Ž๐‘™โ€”especially for ๐ญ๐š๐ฑ๐ข๐ฌ, ๐ญ๐ข๐ฉ๐ฌ, ๐ฌ๐ฆ๐š๐ฅ๐ฅ ๐ฌ๐ก๐จ๐ฉ๐ฌ, ๐š๐ง๐ ๐ž๐ฆ๐ž๐ซ๐ ๐ž๐ง๐œ๐ข๐ž๐ฌ. Exchange a small amount before you leave, which can easily be done at your local bank. Don’t wait until the last minute; request the currency at least two weeks before takeoff.

2. Check Your Passport Expiration Date

Many countries require that your passport be valid for at least ๐’”๐’Š๐’™ ๐’Ž๐’๐’๐’•๐’‰๐’” beyond your travel dates. Check your expiration date well in advance and renew if necessary. Processing times vary, but I suggest renewing as early as possible. If you qualify, you can renew online here!

3. Pay for Any Necessary ETAs, Visas, or Entry Fees

Some destinations require an ๐„๐ฅ๐ž๐œ๐ญ๐ซ๐จ๐ง๐ข๐œ ๐“๐ซ๐š๐ฏ๐ž๐ฅ ๐€๐ฎ๐ญ๐ก๐จ๐ซ๐ข๐ณ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง (๐„๐“๐€), ๐ฏ๐ข๐ฌ๐š, ๐จ๐ซ ๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐ซ๐ฒ ๐Ÿ๐ž๐ž before arrival. Research your destinationโ€™s requirements and apply ahead of time to avoid being denied boarding at the airport.

4. Call Your Cellphone Provider

International roaming charges can be costly, so check with your provider about ๐’Š๐’๐’•๐’†๐’“๐’๐’‚๐’•๐’Š๐’๐’๐’‚๐’ ๐’‘๐’๐’‚๐’๐’” or consider getting an eSIM for data and calls. I recommend Airalo for affordable plans. Apps like WhatsApp and Skype are usually free to use overseas.

5. Buy Travel Plug Adapters

Different countries use different plug types and voltages. A universal power adapter ensures you can charge your phone, laptop, and other electronics wherever you go. ๐“๐ข๐ฉ: Double-check voltage requirements to prevent damage to your devices!
